How to Use CBD in Your Yoga Practice

Recently I was chatting with a group of friends about how CBD has suddenly popped up everywhere - much to my delight. We were talking specifically about how CBD is sold in a lot of fitness studios, but they didn’t really get the point. One of my friends looked at me and said - I get that it’s good for you, I guess I just don’t really understand how to use it for my yoga classes or the gym. And then, as my friends tend to do, she said you should totally write about this!

And so here we are.

It’s important to me that I find expert resources for you to give honest answers to the questions that you submit to me. For this post, I had the pleasure of chatting with Derek Thomas, Veritas Farms Vice President of Business Development. You might recognize Veritas Farms from some of my recent Instagram posts and my favorite things of August 2019 roundup. Here’s a bit about Veritas from their PR rep:

Veritas Farms puts in mission “Be Truly Healthy” into practice every day. The vertically-integrated agribusiness produces the highest quality, full spectrum CBD products, with no psycho-active ingredients, at its 140-acre farm and production facility in Colorado. Here, they control all growing, extracting, manufacturing, bottling, and shipping to ensure the quality, potency, and freshness of products. Each product comes with a batch-unique QR code linking to verifiable Certificates of Analysis from an approved scientific testing laboratory.

Veritas Farms offers a number of full spectrum, all-natural products made with organic ingredients that can be used on and off the mat including flavored tinctures, scented salves, hydrating moisturizers, gummies and more. They are available for purchase online as well as in select retailers including Kroger Family of Stores, CVS Pharmacy and Bartell stores nationwide.

I like Veritas Farms products for a lot of different reasons, but particularly because I think they’re a great starter brand for people wanting to try out CBD but who aren’t necessarily comfortable walking into a pot shop. In particular, I really like their capsules and oils for every day use.

In case you were wondering, this post actually is not sponsored in any way by Veritas Farms - they just were lovely enough to answer these questions. Since I already know a lot about CBD, I polled a few of my CBD newbie friends. Because of that, you might notice that some of the questions are clearly coming from somebody who is newer to CBD.

What are the benefits of incorporating CBD into a fitness routine like yoga?

The benefits of incorporating CBD into a fitness routine like yoga are similar to the benefits of incorporating it into any active lifestyle activities. Full spectrum hemp oil and CBD are great for promoting homeostasis in the body through the endocannabinoid system.

If I want to use CBD with my yoga practice, is topical CBD or edible CBD better?

With so many variables to consider for each person, the only way to determine which way works best for you is to try different products. In fact, we have many customers who use both an ingestible combined with a topical as its thought that you can increase effects by penetrating externally and internally.

Is it OK if I have CBD on an empty stomach?

It sure is! And it’s a good idea to notice the different on-set of effects when you take your full spectrum hemp oil after a meal vs. on an empty stomach.

Should I have CBD before or after yoga?

Taking full spectrum hemp oil before a work out can help ease one minds to have a more intentioned session, while taking it after can support recovery. Depending on the rest of your training schedule, it may not be a bad idea to take it 30 - 45 minutes before your practice for mindset and again 30-45 minutes after to support recovery.

I can never tell if CBD is working for me or not. How do I know?

That’s a very interesting question because people are looking for different results depending on their body. Usually on lower to medium strength doses, there is a feeling of ease and wellbeing that sometimes can be described as "I don’t know exactly how I feel better, I just do". For the higher strengths, there is often a very noticeable sense of calm and wellbeing, along with specific effects that can be felt in local areas.

Is there a kind of yoga that would be better for CBD?

It's possible that in the future, after researchers have discovered more about the molecules and their effects in the body this may very well be discovered. At this time, that can’t really be said.

I do a lot of other workouts in addition to yoga, like running and barre class. Can I use CBD for those, too?

Definitely! Full spectrum hemp oil is great for all active lifestyles!

Do you have any tips on how to distinguish a good CBD?

Definitely! Quality full spectrum hemp oil and CBD products MUST have some key factors met to know if they are quality. There should always be a full panel Certificate of Analysis (that shows cannabinoid and terpene profiles, pesticide analysis, heavy metal analysis, bio-contaminant analysis, and residual solvent analysis - and most importantly should correlate to a specific lot and batch number for that specific product). Full spectrum hemp oil is also always a preferable product over isolated CBD as it provides the full range of cannabinoids. Finally, being fully vertically integrated provides another sense transparency and quality as there are no supply chain concerns.

I hope that this gave you some good insight into two of my favorite things in the entire world - yoga and CBD! If there are any other questions that I can answer or topics that you would like to see covered, please don’t hesitate to reach out. It’s literally my job.

Stay rad,
