3 Wellness Hacks to Spring Clean Your Health Routine

I'm in a slight panic that it's spring already. That means that my wedding is soon, that I need to get my act together, and that pretty soon my ghostly skin will be blessed by the sun, which is much needed. At this point I'm basically see-through.

Spring cleaning is my jam right now (in case you didn't already know), and I've been committed to really taking a look at my lifestyle and finding simple, easy ways to improve my quality of life. The older I get the more I realize that I tend to respond to tiny, thoughtful changes instead of these huge overhauls. I'm all about finding a lifestyle that works for me rather than making these big crazy changes that I just know won't stick. I've partnered with Quest Nutrition to share some of my favorite spring wellness hacks with you, and I just can't wait to hear what you think!

1. Give yourself a Digital Detox.

I challenge you, right now, right this very second, to put down the screens for a bit and just enjoy your life. I know it sounds crazy, but trust me on this one.

As a blogger, doing a digital detox has been revolutionary for my mental health. I spend so much time on social media, on other blogs, and working on projects that it can be really hard to (literally) turn off. I recently started listening to music or podcasts before bed a few nights a week and holy shit, you guys, my sleep has been amazing. It seriously blows my mind what an insane change this has made in my life. I had no idea how much my screen time was impacting my sleep! Putting the phone away a little earlier in the evening lets me enjoy my nightly routine, allows me to relax and stop worrying about sleep, and has given me some seriously awesome sleep. I am forever a #sleepygirl, so this has been life-changing.

I'm not saying that you need to give up your phone for good (fuck no!), but I challenge you to pick a few times when you don't have it on you. Go for a walk with your dog phone-free, sit down and eat your breakfast without your screen nearby, or do what I do and set your phone aside before you go to bed. You will be so surprised by how amazing this simple change will make you feel. Seriously! I mean it! Try it! I'm not kidding!

2. Move in a way that feels good.

During my last semester of college I would set my alarm early to go sit on the exercise bike at the gym and do my reading for class. I hated this morning routine. I hated the bike. I wasn't fast. It didn't feel good in my body. I could never stop counting down the minutes (sometimes even the seconds) until I was done with my workout and I always spent the majority of the time trying to force myself to finish. One day I woke up, looked at myself in the mirror, and said I fucking hate the bike. And you know what? I didn't get back on. I started running and doing other things and it felt amazing. I started loving working out again. Bananas, I know.

I can't stress this enough. I have so many students who I chat with who say "I'm here, but I hate yoga." Really? You hate it? Then why are you paying so much for it? Your time is precious and so are your pennies, so if you really hate doing something stop doing it. Guess what, babes? If you hate running you don't ever have to run again. 

Find a way to workout that makes you feel fully alive. Find a form of fitness that you absolutely cannot wait to do everyday. Your workout should be the highlight of your day and should feel like a shining beacon of sunshine and puppies in your day, not like corporal punishment. Start moving your body because you love it and you want it to feel good, not because you hate it.

3. Eat a great breakfast.

Find a breakfast that you are 100% obsessed with and you will never complain about getting up ever again. I used to force myself to eat oatmeal in high school and I distinctly remember trying to hide from it in the mornings because it was so gross. Once I realized that I was a smoothie girl I started popping out of bed and running immediately to my blender. It changed my life!

 I have a few favorite breakfasts that I like to put on rotation. Sometimes it's tofu scrambles, sometimes it's smoothies, for a while it was salad (don't ask, I don't get it either), and right now I am totally locked in to breakfast bars. Quest makes breakfast bars that taste like straight up candy bars but are full of all the macro-nutrients you need to get your day off to a good start. Plus, even though they taste like candy they only have good stuff in them, so you won't feel like a pile of human garbage later in the day.
